What's the cheapest cold email stack that won't land in spam?

The short answer

The cheapest stack that still hits the inbox has five layers: two secondary domains, four Google Workspace inboxes, warmup included in your sending tool, a pay-per-use verifier and an entry-level sending platform. For one sender that runs about $68–$83 a month as of September 2026. Skip any layer and you pay for it in spam.

All prices are list prices as of September 2026, taken from each vendor's own site (see Sources). Prices change. Check before you buy.

Layer What it does Budget pick(s) Price as of Sept 2026 Skip it if…
1. Domains Separate sending domains that protect your main company domain Porkbun; Namecheap Porkbun .com: $11.08/yr (register and renew). Namecheap .com: $11.28 first year (sale price; new customers can get $6.79 with a promo code), $18.48/yr renewal Never. This layer is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy
2. Inboxes Real mailboxes on those domains that send the email Google Workspace Business Starter; Microsoft 365 Business Basic Google: $8.40/user/mo (Flexible plan) or $84/user/yr (Annual plan), per Google's Workspace billing help pages. Microsoft: $7.00/user/mo paid yearly or $8.40 monthly with Teams; $5.40 yearly or $6.48 monthly without Teams Never
3. Warmup Builds sender reputation on new inboxes before and during sending Built into Instantly (vendor-stated "Unlimited Email Warmup"); MailReach standalone Instantly: $0 extra on Growth. MailReach (as of October 1, 2026): on monthly billing $25 per mailbox/mo for 1–5 mailboxes, $19.50 for 6–20, $18 for 21–50, $16 for 51+; billed annually (20% off) $20, $15.60, $14.40 and $12.80 per mailbox/mo Skip the standalone tool if your sending platform already includes warmup
4. Email verifier Removes bad addresses before they bounce MillionVerifier; ZeroBounce MillionVerifier: $89 for 50,000 credits (~$0.00178 each; smallest pack $39 for 10,000; vendor-stated "credits never expire"). ZeroBounce: pay-as-you-go from $39 for 2,000 validations; free tier of 100 credits/mo Never. Smartlead's "verified prospect emails" cover leads sourced through its SmartProspect database and are a $59/mo add-on on Base and Pro; list verification is a separate paid add-on (vendor-stated)
5. Sending platform Runs sequences, rotates inboxes, tracks replies Instantly Growth; Smartlead Base Instantly Growth: $47/mo monthly or $37.60/mo billed yearly (5,000 emails/mo, 1,000 uploaded contacts, unlimited email accounts). Smartlead Base: $39/mo monthly or $32.50/mo billed yearly (6,000 sends/mo, 2,000 contacts, unlimited email accounts, warmup at the Foundation pool tier) Never. Sending cold email from a plain inbox doesn't scale and has no inbox rotation

When should you skip each pick?

One skip line per tool named above, built from the prices and limits on this page (as of September 2026).

  • Porkbun: skip it if a first-year promo matters more than renewal cost. Namecheap's new-customer price is $6.79 with a code, but it renews at $18.48 a year, against Porkbun's flat $11.08.
  • Namecheap: skip it if you'll hold the domains for years. At $18.48 a year on renewal, it costs $7.40 more per domain than Porkbun's $11.08.
  • Google Workspace Business Starter: skip it if the cheapest list price decides. Microsoft 365 Business Basic without Teams is $5.40 per user a month paid yearly, against Google's $7.00 on a yearly plan.
  • Microsoft 365 Business Basic: skip it if you'd pay monthly with Teams. At $8.40 per user a month that's the same as Google's flexible plan, so the price edge is gone.
  • MailReach: skip it if your sending platform already includes warmup. With Instantly or Smartlead you'd pay twice for the same job.
  • MillionVerifier: skip it if you'll verify only a few hundred addresses a month and want no commitment. ZeroBounce has a free tier of 100 credits a month.
  • ZeroBounce: skip it if price per address decides. Its $39 pack buys 2,000 validations; MillionVerifier's $39 pack buys 10,000 credits.
  • Instantly Growth: skip it if you'll load more than 1,000 contacts in a few months. That cap is a fixed total, and at 504 new contacts a month you hit it in about two months.
  • Smartlead Base: skip it if you need CRM access, an API or webhooks, or verified prospect emails. Base has no CRM access or API, and its 2,000 verified prospect emails are a $59 a month add-on.

What does the minimum viable stack cost per month?

About $83 a month for one sender on month-to-month billing, or about $68 with annual plans. A 3-rep team runs about $206 a month, or roughly $69 per rep. Here's the math, line by line.

Our assumptions (change them to fit your team):

  • Sending cap: ~30 cold emails per inbox per day. That's the Pipe Playbook guideline, not a data point. It matches our pipeline calculator.
  • 21 weekday sending days per month.
  • 2 inboxes per domain, 4 inboxes per rep.
  • 5 emails per contact (the first email plus 4 follow-ups), which sits inside the 4–7 touchpoint range in the Instantly Cold Email Benchmark Report 2026 (on Instantly's platform).

Worked example 1: one sender

Volume: 4 inboxes × 30 emails × 21 days = 2,520 emails/month, or 2,520 ÷ 5 = 504 new contacts/month. That fits under Instantly Growth's 5,000 emails.

Line item Math Monthly billing Annual billing
2 domains (Porkbun) 2 × $11.08 = $22.16/yr ÷ 12 $1.85 $1.85
4 inboxes (Google Workspace Business Starter) 4 × $8.40, or 4 × $7.00 ($84 ÷ 12) $33.60 $28.00
Warmup Included in Instantly Growth (vendor-stated) $0.00 $0.00
Verification (MillionVerifier, amortized from the $89 pack) 504 contacts × $0.00178 $0.90 $0.90
Sending (Instantly Growth) Plan price $47.00 $37.60
Total $83.35/mo $68.35/mo

Cash in month one is higher: the full $22.16 for domains and the $89 verifier pack go out up front. On monthly billing that's $22.16 + $33.60 + $47.00 + $89.00 = $191.76 in month one. After that, the pack covers the verifier line for a long time.

One catch: Instantly Growth caps uploaded contacts at 1,000, and that's a fixed total of contacts sitting in your campaigns (active or paused), not a monthly allowance that resets (Instantly Help Center). At 504 new contacts a month, you hit it in about two months. Delete finished contacts to free up space, or plan to upgrade.

Worked example 2: a 3-rep team

Volume: 12 inboxes × 30 × 21 = 7,560 emails/month, or 7,560 ÷ 5 = 1,512 new contacts/month. That blows past Instantly Growth (5,000) and Smartlead Base (6,000), so the team moves up to Instantly Hypergrowth (100,000 emails/mo, 25,000 uploaded contacts).

Line item Math Monthly billing Annual billing
6 domains (Porkbun) 6 × $11.08 = $66.48/yr ÷ 12 $5.54 $5.54
12 inboxes (Google Workspace Business Starter) 12 × $8.40, or 12 × $7.00 $100.80 $84.00
Warmup Included in Instantly Hypergrowth (vendor-stated) $0.00 $0.00
Verification (MillionVerifier) 1,512 × $0.00178 $2.69 $2.69
Sending (Instantly Hypergrowth) $97/mo monthly; $77.60/mo billed yearly $97.00 $77.60
Total $206.03/mo $169.83/mo
Per rep Total ÷ 3 $68.68 $56.61

The math: $5.54 + $100.80 + $0.00 + $2.69 + $97.00 = $206.03 a month on monthly billing, or $5.54 + $84.00 + $0.00 + $2.69 + $77.60 = $169.83 on annual plans. Divide by 3 reps: $68.68 and $56.61. Team-member invites start on Hypergrowth, and Instantly's pricing and help pages list no per-seat fee (as of September 2026), so all three reps share one workspace.

What's not in these totals?

The hidden overhead beyond the stack. Every total above covers domains, inboxes, warmup, verification and the sending platform. None of them covers a source for the email addresses. If you need one, Hunter Starter is $49 a month, or $34 billed yearly, with credits shared by unlimited team members (see what tools an SDR actually needs).

Stack (as of Sept 2026) Stack total, monthly billing Plus Hunter Starter Stack total, annual billing Plus Hunter Starter
One sender (worked example 1) $83.35 $83.35 + $49.00 = $132.35 $68.35 $68.35 + $34.00 = $102.35
3-rep team (worked example 2) $206.03 $206.03 + $49.00 = $255.03 $169.83 $169.83 + $34.00 = $203.83

Hunter Starter includes 2,000 credits a month, enough for the team's 1,512 new contacts only if nearly every search finds an address. Ownership of the mailboxes, your reps' time and a phone-data tool are not in any total on this page.

Do you need separate domains for cold email?

Yes. Send cold email from lookalike secondary domains, never your main company domain, so a bad week of complaints can't touch the domain your invoices and customer email run on. At $11.08 a year each (Porkbun, as of September 2026), it's the cheapest layer in the stack.

Point each secondary domain's website to your real site, keep the name obviously yours, and buy two per rep so you can rest one if its numbers dip.

What authentication do you need before you send?

Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on every sending domain before the first warmup email. Google's sender guidelines require SPF or DKIM for all senders sending to Gmail, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC for bulk senders (about 5,000+ messages a day to Gmail). You won't be a bulk sender with this stack. Set up all three anyway. It's free and takes an afternoon.

Google also wants your spam rate in Postmaster Tools kept below 0.3% (Google Email sender guidelines; Yahoo Sender Hub). That line doesn't care how cheap your stack was.

Is warmup still needed if your sender includes it?

Yes. What changes is the bill, not the job. New inboxes still need a slow ramp. If your sending platform includes warmup, you just don't pay a second tool for it.

Instantly lists "Unlimited Email Warmup" on its Growth plan (vendor-stated), so a standalone warmup tool like MailReach at $25 per mailbox a month (monthly billing for 1–5 mailboxes, as of October 1, 2026) would add $100 a month for four inboxes (4 × $25) and buy you nothing extra on day one. Smartlead's pricing page lists a warmup pool on every plan: Foundation tier on Base, Growth on Pro, Premium on Unlimited Smart and Prime (as of September 2026). The $59 add-on shown next to Base and Pro is for verified prospect emails, not warmup. The standalone-tool breakdown lives in our best email warmup tools guide.

Why pay for email verification?

Because bounces burn domains, and verifying 504 contacts costs about 90 cents. Our guideline is to pause above a 2% bounce rate; Google and Microsoft publish no bounce threshold. Verified lists bounce less, so verify before every send.

Pick MillionVerifier if you'll use the credits over time; its smallest pack is $39 for 10,000 credits. ZeroBounce's $39 pay-as-you-go pack buys 2,000 validations, so pick it only if you want ZeroBounce's other tools in the same account. Full comparison: best email verification tool.

Which sending platform should a budget team pick?

Instantly Growth is our budget pick for one sender, because warmup and unlimited email accounts come inside the $47 price (vendor-stated). Smartlead Base is cheaper at $39 and includes warmup (the entry Foundation pool), but it has no CRM access or API, and its 2,000 verified prospect emails are a $59/mo add-on. Everything else is a tiebreaker.

The setup checklist (do it in this order)

  1. Buy domains. Two lookalike .com domains per rep. Forward each to your main site.
  2. Authenticate. Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for every domain. Start DMARC at p=none.
  3. Create inboxes. Two per domain, with real names, photos and signatures.
  4. Connect and warm up. Connect every inbox to your sending platform and turn warmup on. Ramp slowly and stay at or under ~30 cold emails per inbox per day (our guideline).
  5. Verify your list. Run every contact through the verifier. Drop invalid addresses before upload.
  6. Send. Launch a 5-email sequence written with the cold emails that work play. Watch bounces and your spam rate weekly, and rest any inbox that slips.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cold email stack cost per month?

For one sender, about $68–$83 a month as of September 2026, depending on annual or monthly billing: domains, four Google Workspace inboxes, a verifier and Instantly Growth with warmup included. A 3-rep team runs about $170–$206 a month.

How many inboxes do I need to send 100 cold emails a day?

Four, at our guideline of ~30 cold emails per inbox per day (4 × 30 = 120). Spread them across two domains.

Is Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 cheaper for cold email inboxes?

On list price, Microsoft 365 Business Basic without Teams is cheaper ($5.40 per user a month paid yearly, as of September 2026) than Google Workspace Business Starter ($84 a year, or $7 a month). You can also mix both providers across your domains.

Do I need a separate warmup tool?

Not if your sending platform includes warmup. Instantly lists unlimited warmup on every Outreach plan (vendor-stated). Buy a standalone tool only if yours doesn't.

Do I need DMARC if I send fewer than 5,000 emails a day?

Google only requires it for bulk senders, but set it up anyway. It's free, it protects your domain from spoofing, and it's required the day you scale.
