What is the best email verification tool for cold email?

The short answer

The best email verification tool for cold email is the one you run on every list, every time, before a single email goes out. Our picks: Bouncer for one-off lists, MillionVerifier for ongoing volume, and ZeroBounce for agencies juggling catch-all-heavy B2B lists. Verify, cut the invalids, quarantine the risky ones, then send.

Quick picks (prices as of September 2026):

  • One-off list: Bouncer. Buy only what you need, credits never expire, and it lists Instantly, Smartlead and lemlist integrations.
  • Ongoing volume: MillionVerifier. The lowest price per 1,000 checks we could confirm: $1.78 on the 50,000 pack, less on bigger packs.
  • Agency: ZeroBounce. Scores catch-all addresses 1–10 so you can set a risk line per client.

The per-1,000 math:

  • MillionVerifier: $39 ÷ 10 = $3.90; $89 ÷ 50 = $1.78; $149 ÷ 100 = $1.49; $449 ÷ 1,000 = $0.45
  • Bouncer: $8 ÷ 1 = $8.00; $35 ÷ 5 = $7.00; $60 ÷ 10 = $6.00; $400 ÷ 100 = $4.00
  • NeverBounce: $8 ÷ 1 = $8.00; Growth $49 ÷ 10 = $4.90 (only if you use all 10,000 credits that month)
  • Emailable: $0.0076 × 1,000 = $7.60; $32.30 ÷ 5 = $6.46; $60 ÷ 10 = $6.00; $420 ÷ 100 = $4.20
  • ZeroBounce: $39 ÷ 2 = $19.50; $649 ÷ 100 = $6.49; ZeroBounce ONE $99 ÷ 10 = $9.90

Credits never expire at Bouncer, MillionVerifier and Emailable. NeverBounce credits expire 12 months after purchase. ZeroBounce credits never expire while you hold an active ZeroBounce ONE subscription; without one, ZeroBounce says expiration rules may apply depending on when the account was created or the credits were bought.

When should you skip each verifier?

One skip line per tool, from the prices and rules above.

  • Bouncer: skip it if you verify tens of thousands a month. Its price per 1,000 only falls to $4.00 at 100,000 credits, against MillionVerifier's $1.78 at 50,000.
  • MillionVerifier: skip it for a small one-off buy. Its smallest pack is 10,000 credits for $39, while Bouncer starts at 1,000 for $8.
  • ZeroBounce: skip the entry pack unless you need its 1–10 catch-all scoring. 2,000 credits cost $39, or $19.50 per 1,000, against $1.78 per 1,000 at MillionVerifier's 50,000 pack.
  • NeverBounce: skip it if you buy credits to use over months. They expire 12 months after purchase; Bouncer, MillionVerifier and Emailable credits don't.
  • Emailable: skip it if price per check decides. At $7.60 per 1,000 on 5,000 credits it costs more than Bouncer's 5,000 pack ($7.00 per 1,000) and far more than MillionVerifier's 50,000 pack ($1.78).

Why should you verify every list before a cold email campaign?

Because contact data rots fast, and every bounce tells mailbox providers you don't know who you're emailing. At least 23% of an email list goes bad each year (ZeroBounce, 11B+ addresses, 2025; ZeroBounce calls it a low estimate), and an older MarketingSherpa estimate quoted on HubSpot's database-decay page (the page gives no date) puts it at 22.5% a year. Either way, a list that was clean in January is quietly sabotaging you by fall.

The upside is real too: verified lists bounce less, and fewer bounces protect your sending domains. Verification is the cheapest line in your stack, and it protects your sending domains. If you're building the stack from scratch, see where the verifier fits in the cheapest cold email stack and the verifier layer in Pick the Stack.

What do valid, invalid, catch-all and unknown mean?

Valid means send, invalid means delete, catch-all means the server won't tell you, and unknown means the check didn't finish. Names vary by tool (Bouncer says "deliverable, risky, undeliverable, unknown"), but every verifier sorts your list into these four buckets.

Result What it means What to do
Valid / deliverable The mailbox exists and accepts mail Send
Invalid / undeliverable The mailbox doesn't exist or the domain is dead Delete. Never "try anyway"
Catch-all / accept-all The company's server accepts mail for any address, so the verifier can't confirm this specific person Hold in a separate segment (see below)
Unknown The server didn't respond in time Re-verify later. Bouncer, Emailable and ZeroBounce don't charge for these

Catch-alls are the B2B trap. Plenty of companies set their servers to accept everything, so a real address and a typo look identical from the outside. Keep catch-alls out of your main campaign. Send them in a small, separate batch from fully warmed inboxes. If your tool scores them (ZeroBounce ranks catch-alls 1–10), start with the top of the range.

What bounce rate should make you stop sending?

Pause the campaign if bounces climb past 2%. Our guideline is to pause above 2%; Google and Microsoft publish no bounce threshold, so treat 2% as your tripwire.

Here's what that looks like in real numbers. Send 5,000 emails at a 2% bounce rate and that's 100 hard bounces hitting your domain in one campaign. Verifying those same 5,000 contacts on Bouncer's 5,000-credit pack costs $35 (as of September 2026). That's the whole argument.

When you cross the line: stop the sequence, re-verify the remaining contacts, pull every invalid, move catch-alls to their own segment, and restart at lower daily volume. Then run your real list size through the pipeline calculator to see how many verified contacts you need to hit your meeting target.

Which email verification tool should you pick for your situation?

Match the tool to how often you verify and how many lists you manage. The best tool is the one you'll run every time.

One-off list (a few thousand contacts): Bouncer. Minimum buy is 1,000 credits for $8, credits never expire, and you don't pay for unknowns or duplicates. It lists Instantly, Smartlead and lemlist among its integrations, so the clean list can land where you send from. NeverBounce matches the $8 entry price, but its credits expire after 12 months. Ongoing volume (tens of thousands a month): MillionVerifier. At $1.78 per 1,000 on the 50,000 pack ($1.49 on the 100,000 pack), it's the cheapest rate we could confirm on a vendor page. Catch-all verification costs nothing extra, it refunds risky emails it can't confirm, and credits don't expire, so you can buy big and burn through it over months.

Agency (many clients, many domains): ZeroBounce. Agencies live and die on client domain health. ZeroBounce's 1–10 catch-all scoring lets you set a stricter cutoff for a cautious client and a looser one for an aggressive one. It lists 40+ integrations, including Clay and HubSpot. The trade-off is price: $19.50 per 1,000 at the entry pack, falling to $6.49 per 1,000 on a 100,000-credit pack or $9.90 per 1,000 on the $99/month ZeroBounce ONE plan (10,000 credits), so size your purchase before you commit.

Also solid: Emailable ($7.60 per 1,000 on 5,000 credits) if you want refunded unknowns and a written 99% deliverability guarantee (vendor-stated).

What should you check before every cold email send?

Run this checklist before every campaign. It takes ten minutes and saves domains.

The Pipe Playbook pre-send list hygiene checklist

  1. Dedupe first. Don't pay to verify the same address twice.
  2. Strip role addresses. Cut info@, sales@, support@ and other shared inboxes from cold campaigns.
  3. Verify the full list, today. Not last month. At least 23% of an email list goes bad each year (ZeroBounce, 2025).
  4. Delete every invalid. No exceptions, no "second chance" campaigns.
  5. Segment catch-alls. Send them separately, in smaller batches, from warmed inboxes only.
  6. Re-run unknowns. Verify them again before deciding. Don't send unverified.
  7. Check your warmup and authentication. SPF, DKIM and DMARC in place, inboxes warmed. Our warmup tools guide covers the ramp.
  8. Set your stop-loss. Decide now: bounces past 2% (our guideline) pause the campaign.
  9. Send a copy that earns replies. A clean list can't save a bad email. Use cold emails that work.
  10. Log the date. Record when the list was verified so you know when to re-run it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to verify contacts my data provider already marked as verified?

Yes. Providers verify at a point in time, and at least 23% of an email list goes bad each year (ZeroBounce, 2025). Re-verify right before you send.

Can I verify emails for free?

For small tests, yes. As of September 2026, Bouncer and MillionVerifier give 100 free credits, Emailable includes 250, and ZeroBounce's free plan gives 100 credits a month. That's enough to test a tool, not to clean a campaign.

Should I send cold emails to catch-all addresses?

Carefully. Put catch-alls in their own small segment, send from warmed inboxes, and stop if bounces climb. Never mix them into your main list.

Does email verification keep me out of spam?

No. Verification cuts bounces. Inbox placement also depends on authentication, warmup, volume and complaint rates. Google requires bulk senders to keep spam complaints under 0.3% (Google Email sender guidelines).
