How do you find the decision maker at a company?
Don't hunt for one person: find the person who owns the problem and the budget, then add one or two people around them. Start from the job title that feels the pain, confirm the role on LinkedIn and the company site, and pull a verified email for each before you send, because a wrong title wastes the whole sequence. Prices below are as of October 2026.
How we research this: facts come from each vendor’s public pages and named studies, dated where shown; the math is ours and labeled. Vendor prices and limits are as of October 1, 2026.

Why does the right person matter so much?
Because relevance is the filter your buyers apply. Gartner's 2025 press release, based on 632 B2B buyers surveyed in August and September 2024, says 73% actively steer clear of suppliers whose outreach isn't relevant to them. Writing to the wrong role is the fastest way to be irrelevant. People also move: Lusha's own 2026 measurement found that 12.25% of US sales leaders at VP and C-suite level changed roles within 12 months (vendor data), so a title you saw last quarter may be stale. And "wrong person" is a common way for a cold call to end: in Cognism's State of Cold Calling 2024 report, based on 10,000 of its own cold calls, 27% ended with "I'm the wrong person to talk to" (vendor data). A change at the account, such as a new hire in the role you sell to, is also a good reason to reach out; see sales trigger events.
What's the five-step method?
- Name the pain, then the title. Ask who loses sleep over the problem you solve. That is your buyer title. Write down two backups.
- Find them at the company. Search by company and title on LinkedIn, or use a data tool. LinkedIn's Sales Navigator has 50+ search filters (see is Sales Navigator worth it?).
- Confirm the role is current. Check the person's LinkedIn headline, the company's team page and recent news. If the profile shows a job change, skip them.
- Get a verified email, and a phone if you call. See how to find a work email and how to find a direct phone number.
- Reach two or three people. The buyer, plus the person who feels the pain daily, plus a peer. Vary the message by role. For how big the whole group usually is, see how many people are in a B2B buying committee.
Which job title should you target?
Our rule of thumb, not a study: the bigger the company, the lower the title that starts the conversation.
| Company size | Start with | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50 people | Founder or CEO | Head of the function |
| 50 to 200 | VP or head of the function | A director or manager who runs it day to day |
| 200 and up | Director or manager (your likely champion) | The VP who signs, and a user |
Use these roles in your head when you write: the buyer who signs, the champion who wants the fix, and the user who lives with it. One person can hold two roles in a small company. A champion who leaves can end a deal, so having a second contact matters. Once you reach them, BANT vs MEDDIC shows how to check that your contact really has the authority to buy.
Which tools find decision makers, and what do they cost?
| Tool | How it helps | Cost (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Sales Navigator | Search by title, company and seniority; the page lists 50+ filters | See our Sales Navigator page |
| Hunter Domain Search | Lists emails at a domain with job titles and sources, and has a department filter. One search credit covers up to 10 emails found for a domain | Free: 50 credits a month. Starter $49 a month, $34 billed yearly (2,000 credits a month) |
| UpLead | Search by title and other filters; one credit unlocks one contact with email and mobile | Essentials $99 a month ($74 billed annually); Plus $199 a month ($149 billed annually) |
Cost per account for three contacts (our math):
- Hunter Starter, monthly billing: one domain search is 1 credit and verifying three emails at 0.5 credit each is 1.5. That's 2.5 credits × $0.0245, about 6 cents.
- UpLead Essentials: 3 credits at about $0.58, or about $1.75 monthly and $1.31 billed annually, and each includes a mobile number.
Hunter is the budget path for emails. UpLead costs more per contact but includes the phone. For all the options, see the best B2B contact data provider. For UpLead's plans and cost per contact, see is UpLead worth it?.
What if you can't find the right person?
Ask on the way in. If you reach the wrong person, the polite move is to ask who handles the problem. Cold call objection handling covers "wrong person". Keep the answer in your CRM so the next rep doesn't repeat the hunt. Once you have the right name, cap the time you spend on it; see how much time to research a prospect.
For a whole batch of accounts, follow the contact enrichment workflow: list, find, verify, dedupe, load.
