How do you find a prospect's direct phone number?

The short answer

Buy it from a contact data tool that sells mobile and direct-dial numbers (Lusha, UpLead or Kaspr for small teams; Cognism for Europe), then prove it by calling. Fill the gaps by hand: email signatures, replies, the company switchboard. Budget roughly $0.37 to $0.65 per number at list prices (as of September 2026), and about 73 numbers for every meeting you want to book (our math on Cognism's 2024 cold calling data, from one vendor's own SDR team).

How we research this: facts come from each vendor’s public pages and named studies, dated where shown; the math is ours and labeled. Vendor prices and limits are as of October 4, 2026.

Where do direct phone numbers actually come from?

Five places. Only one of them scales, but the other four fix the numbers the tools miss.

Source Speed Cost Quality Use it for
Contact data tool (Lusha, UpLead, Kaspr, Cognism) Seconds per contact About $0.37–$0.65 per number on self-serve plans (as of Sept 2026) Varies by tool and region. Test it Your whole list
Email signatures and replies Free, but you wait for a reply $0 High: they wrote it themselves Anyone who has ever emailed you back, even "not now"
Company switchboard A minute per call $0 Gets you the building, not the person Asking for someone by name or extension
Company website and press pages Minutes $0 Mostly main lines and sales numbers Smaller companies where founders list their own line
A colleague of the prospect One extra call $0 High if they give it Being routed: "who's the best person for X?"

Mobile numbers are worth the effort. Cognism's State of Cold Calling 2024 found mobile numbers get the highest response. A switchboard makes you earn every transfer.

How do you find a direct dial step by step?

Run your list through this in order. Each step catches what the one before it missed.

  1. Start from a tight list. Pull only the titles and companies that fit your ideal customer profile. Every wasted lookup costs credits.
  2. Reveal numbers in your data tool. Pull mobile first, direct line second. Skip anyone who shows only a main company line; that one's free on the website.
  3. Tag the source and date. Save "Lusha, 2026-09" (or whichever tool) next to each number in your CRM. When a number goes bad, you'll know which tool to blame.
  4. Call before you trust. The first dial is the test. Log each result: right person, wrong person, disconnected, voicemail.
  5. Mine your inbox. Search replies and signatures for your target accounts. People who emailed you once often left a mobile in the footer.
  6. Use the switchboard for the rest. Ask for the person by full name. If the operator won't connect you, ask for the direct extension so you can reach them next time.
  7. Refresh every quarter. Lusha's 2026 study of 140,284 US sales leaders found 12.25% changed jobs in 12 months and 25.67% in 24 months (job changes only, not total decay), and ZeroBounce found at least 23% of an email list goes bad each year (2025; it calls that a low estimate). Numbers age with them.

Which tools find direct phone numbers?

Four tools with a clear phone-data offer. Prices from each vendor's own pricing page, as of September 2026, shown as monthly billing / billed annually (per month).

Tool How a phone number is charged Entry plan Free option Best for
Lusha 5 credits per phone number (1 per email) Starter $49.90 / $37.45, 400 credits a month, 1 seat. Pro $69.90 / $52.45, 600 credits a month 40 credits a month Reps who call a focused list
UpLead 1 credit = one contact with verified email and mobile direct dial Essentials $99 / $74 (170 credits a month); Plus $199 / $149 (400 a month). One user per plan. Extra credits $0.60 on Essentials 7-day trial, 5 credits Reps who want email and mobile on every contact
Kaspr Phone credits, capped per user; unlimited B2B email credits on paid plans Starter $65 per user a month (100 phone credits a month); Business $99 (200 a month). The page shows monthly prices only 5 phone credits a month LinkedIn-first prospecting, Europe on a budget
Cognism "1 credit = 1 revealed contact"; Pro adds "higher-quality, accurate mobile data" and on-demand verification (vendor-stated) Quote only; Standard and Pro include 5 seats None listed Teams of 5+ calling into Europe

What about Hunter? Its pricing page doesn't mention phone numbers, so test a sample before you rely on it for calling, or pair it with one of the tools above. And every accuracy claim above is the vendor's own. The only test that counts is the one you run on your own list (see the 20-contact test in best B2B contact data provider).

When should you skip each tool?

One skip line per tool, from the table and cost math above (as of September 2026).

  • Lusha: skip it if you need many numbers. A phone costs 5 credits, so Starter reveals at most 80 a month, at about $0.62 each.
  • UpLead: skip it if you only want emails, or if each rep needs a seat. It's one user per plan.
  • Kaspr: skip it if you don't work from LinkedIn profiles, or you want annual pricing. The page shows monthly prices only.
  • Cognism: skip it if you're under 5 reps or not calling into Europe. Standard and Pro include 5 seats, and it's quote only.
  • Aircall: skip it with fewer than 3 reps. It has a 3-license minimum.

How much does one direct phone number cost?

Our math at list prices, as of September 2026, assuming every credit turns into a number. Real cost runs higher, because not every lookup returns one.

Plan Price Numbers you can reveal Cost per number
Lusha Starter, monthly $49.90 a month 80 a month (400 credits ÷ 5) $0.62
Lusha Starter, billed yearly $449.10 a year 960 a year (4,800 ÷ 5) $0.47
Lusha Pro, monthly $69.90 a month 120 a month (600 ÷ 5) $0.58
UpLead Essentials, monthly $99 a month 170 a month $0.58 (email included)
UpLead Essentials, billed annually $888 a year 2,040 a year $0.44 (email included)
UpLead Plus, monthly $199 a month 400 a month $0.50 (email included)
UpLead Plus, billed annually $1,788 a year 4,800 a year $0.37 (email included)
Kaspr Starter, monthly $65 per user a month 100 a month $0.65
Kaspr Business, monthly $99 per user a month 200 a month $0.50

The math: $49.90 ÷ 80 = $0.62; $449.10 ÷ 960 = $0.47; $69.90 ÷ 120 = $0.58; $99 ÷ 170 = $0.58; $888 ÷ 2,040 = $0.44; $199 ÷ 400 = $0.50; $1,788 ÷ 4,800 = $0.37; $65 ÷ 100 = $0.65; $99 ÷ 200 = $0.50 (rounded). Two patterns jump out. Lusha charges five credits for a phone and one for an email, so a phone-heavy rep drains Starter fast. UpLead and Kaspr get cheaper per number as you move up a plan. UpLead Plus billed annually is the lowest list price per number on this table, with the email thrown in; UpLead Essentials billed annually is next at about $0.44.

How many phone numbers do you need to book a meeting?

About 73. Here's the chain, using Cognism's State of Cold Calling 2024 (dials from one vendor's own SDR team):

  • One team's connect rate: about 1 in 6 dials reached a person (16.6%).
  • About 4.82% of conversations became meetings.
  • That works out to roughly 1 meeting per 220 dials (our math on Cognism's funnel).
  • Cognism found 3 attempts per contact is the optimal number.

So, our math, assuming every number gets all three attempts: 220 dials ÷ 3 ≈ 73 numbers per meeting. Want 5 meetings a month from the phone? That's about 367 fresh numbers. At $0.37 to $0.65 each, that's roughly $135 to $240 a month in phone data, before the cost of the dialer and the rep's time.

Size it to your own numbers with the Pipe Playbook calculator. The full funnel is the chain above: about 1 meeting per 220 dials.

How do you know a phone number is any good?

Call it and count. Your connect rate is the scorecard: one team's connect rate in Cognism's 2024 data was about 1 in 6 dials (16.6%). If you're far under that after a few hundred dials, suspect the data before you blame the rep (our rule of thumb, not a benchmark).

Two more checks:

  • Track wrong numbers by source. If one tool's numbers keep reaching the wrong person, move your credits to the tool that wins your own test.
  • Make your calls worth answering. 77% of consumers are more likely to answer when they know who's calling (Hiya, State of the Call 2024). A recognizable caller ID and a local number help. Aircall includes one local or toll-free number per plan and charges $6 a month for each extra number (as of September 2026).

What rules apply when you call mobile numbers?

It depends on where the person is and how you dial. Rules on calling mobiles, do-not-call lists and recording calls differ by country and US state. Some vendors do part of the screening for you: Cognism lists US, UK, Australian, French and German do-not-call registries among the ones it checks its data against (vendor-stated). This isn't legal advice: check your target regions with counsel before you load a dialer.

How do you pick a phone data tool in 60 seconds?

Stop at the first "yes."

  1. Calling into Europe with a team of 5+? → Cognism (quote).
  2. Prospecting from LinkedIn profiles all day? → Kaspr (Business works out to about $0.50 per number at its monthly price).
  3. Want the email and the mobile for every contact? → UpLead (Essentials to start; Plus when you need 400 a month, the lowest cost per number here at about $0.37 billed annually).
  4. Calling a short, focused list? → Lusha Starter.
  5. Need a dialer to actually call them? → Aircall (Professional includes a power dialer: $70 per license a month, or $50 billed annually; 3-license minimum, as of September 2026) or a parallel dialer at higher volume: best parallel dialer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you find someone's direct phone number on LinkedIn?

Rarely on the profile itself. Chrome extensions like Kaspr and Lusha read the profile you're viewing and return the numbers in their own database, charged against your phone credits.

What's the difference between a direct dial and a mobile number?

A direct dial rings the person's desk line at work, skipping the switchboard. A mobile rings their cell. Cognism's 2024 data found mobiles get the highest response, which is why most tools lead with them.

Is there a free way to find direct phone numbers?

Yes, for small numbers. Free plans give you a handful each month (Lusha 40 credits, which is 8 numbers; Kaspr 5 phone credits; UpLead a 5-credit trial, as of September 2026). The manual routes (email signatures, replies, asking for an extension) cost nothing but time.

How many times should you call a number before giving up?

Cognism's State of Cold Calling 2024 found 3 attempts per contact is the optimal number. Space them out and mix in email between calls.

Why do so many phone numbers turn out wrong?

People move. Lusha's 2026 study found 25.67% of US sales leaders changed jobs within 24 months (job changes only, not total decay), and ZeroBounce found at least 23% of an email list goes bad each year. A number that was right when the vendor collected it can be wrong by the time you dial. Tag each number with its source and date, and re-check stale ones before a calling block.
