What Is a Good Cold Call Connect Rate?
There is no published standard, so use one team's number as a reference point. In Cognism's State of Cold Calling 2024, from one vendor's own SDR team, 9,247 of 55,701 dials connected: 16.6%, about 1 in 6. If you're well below that (under about 8%), the problem is usually your data or caller ID, not your script. If you're at or above it, your gains come from the conversation.

What is a cold call connect rate, and how do you calculate it?
Connect rate is the share of dials where a person picks up. Formula: connects ÷ dials. Forty dials with six pickups is a 15% connect rate. Measure it per list and per persona, over at least a week, so one bad morning doesn't skew it.
Don't confuse it with the rates further down the funnel:
| Metric | Formula | One team's rate (Cognism 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Connect rate | Connects ÷ Dials | 16.6% |
| Conversation rate | Conversations ÷ Connects | 57% (5,265 of 9,247, our math) |
| Meeting rate | Meetings ÷ Conversations | 4.82% (254 of 5,265) |
How many cold calls does it take to book a meeting?
About 200 to 250 dials per meeting at that team's rates (our math on Cognism's totals). Scaled to 1,000 dials, the numbers give roughly 166 connects, 95 conversations and 4-5 booked meetings (254 meetings from 55,701 dials). Your own rates will differ, so plug them in:
Dials needed = meetings you want ÷ (connect rate × conversation rate × meeting rate)
Example: 10 meetings ÷ (0.166 × 0.57 × 0.0482) ≈ 2,200 dials. Raise the connect rate to 20% with better numbers and the same 10 meetings take about 1,800 dials. (Our math on that team's rates.) For a wider view of dials per meeting, see how many cold calls it takes to book a meeting.
Why is my cold call connect rate so low?
Three levers set your connect rate before you say a word:
- Data. Switchboards, stale numbers and wrong mobiles never reach a person. Cognism's report says mobile numbers get the highest response rate. If you need better numbers, see how to find a direct phone number.
- Caller ID. In Hiya's State of the Call 2024 consumer survey, 77% of consumers said they're more likely to answer when they know who's calling. That is consumer data, not B2B buyers, but the mechanism is the same: a number flagged as spam is capped before it rings. See why prospects don't answer unknown numbers.
- Persona. Title, company size and industry change who picks up. Compare each persona to itself, not to a blended average. And don't assume executives never answer: in Cognism's data, CEOs and executives were the top title group, at 11.91% of conversations.
Your script isn't on the list. It can't make a phone ring on someone's desk; it only matters after they pick up.
What connect rate should I aim for?
Use one team's 16.6% as the anchor. Our rule of thumb:
| Your connect rate | What it usually means | Fix first |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8% | Less than half that team's rate: an upstream problem | Data source, then caller ID, then dialing times |
| 8-16% | In range, with room to climb | Clean the list and split it by persona |
| 16% or higher | Healthy top of funnel | Coach the conversation: opener, first objection, meeting ask |
These bands are a Pipe Playbook guideline built on one team's connect rate, not a published benchmark.
How many times should you call a prospect?
At least three times. Cognism's report calls three "the optimal number of cold call attempts" to connect with a lead. Connect rate counts dials; reach rate counts people, and only coming back raises it. A rep who calls a good list three times reaches people a one-and-done rep never hears from.
What should you do once someone picks up?
Give a clear reason for your call, right away. Our cold call openers play breaks down the opener data and gives you lines to use. That's where the gap between ordinary and top reps opens: fewer than 5 in 100 conversations became meetings in that data, so every point you add there counts.
How much activity do you need to hit your number? Run it in the Pipe Playbook calculator. Clean lists also start with a clear ideal customer profile.
