Should you use a separate domain for cold email?
Yes. Buy a lookalike of your brand name, put 2 inboxes on it, and send cold email from there, never from your main domain. A .com costs $11.08 a year at Porkbun, and your main domain carries your invoices, your customer replies and everything else that pays the bills. If a cold campaign goes badly, you lose a spare domain, not the one the business runs on.

Why not just send from your main domain?
Because cold email is the riskiest mail you send, and spam complaints are how mailbox providers keep score. Google's sender guidelines ask you to keep the spam rate in Postmaster Tools below 0.10% and never let it reach 0.30%. Yahoo's line is 0.3%. Email to people who never asked for it is exactly the mail that pushes those numbers up.
A separate domain keeps that risk off the domain your customers write to. That's our recommendation, and the sending-tool vendors make the same case. GlockApps, for one, argues that a dedicated outreach domain shields your main domain's reputation from the fallout (vendor view, not a study).
For where this fits in the full stack, see the cheapest cold email stack.
What should the lookalike domain look like?
Close enough that a prospect who checks recognizes you, different enough that it isn't your main domain. Smartlead's advice is to keep your brand in the name and add a short word before or after it, with examples like getyourbrand.com, tryyourbrand.com and yourbrandhq.com, and to prefer .com (vendor guidance). It also warns against reusing your exact name on another ending, such as yourbrand.io next to yourbrand.com: in its view, problems on one can spill over to the other.
Our rules:
- Use your own brand. Never a lookalike of someone else's company name.
- Keep it short and readable. If a rep can't say it out loud, a prospect won't trust it.
- Give it somewhere to land. Smartlead's point is that a domain with nothing behind it reads as disposable. A one-page site or a redirect fixes that.
Should the extra domain redirect to your main site?
Yes. A redirect is the cheap fix: anyone who types the lookalike into a browser lands on your real homepage. GlockApps goes further and says that with a redirect in place, Google and other providers won't link the two domains (vendor claim, and we couldn't confirm it with Google). Treat that as a bonus, not a shield. The protection comes from never sending cold email from the main domain at all.
How many inboxes per domain, and how many sends?
Two inboxes per domain, about 30 cold sends per inbox a day. That's our house guideline, so each domain carries about 60 cold sends a day. Vendors give wider ranges: Smartlead recommends 2 to 3 mailboxes per domain and up to 50 cold emails per mailbox a day. We stay more cautious on purpose. The vendor table and our reasoning are in how many cold emails per inbox per day.
What that means for your domain count (our math, with 4 inboxes per rep and Porkbun .com at $11.08 a year, as of October 2026):
| Reps | Inboxes | Domains | Domain cost a year | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 2 | $22.16 | $1.85 |
| 2 | 8 | 4 | $44.32 | $3.69 |
| 3 | 12 | 6 | $66.48 | $5.54 |
| 5 | 20 | 10 | $110.80 | $9.23 |
The domains are the small line item. The inboxes are the real bill, and you'd buy those anyway: Google Workspace Business Starter is $8.40 per user a month on the Flexible plan or $84 a year on the Annual plan. Full monthly totals per team size are in the cheapest cold email stack and how many cold emails per inbox per day.
How long should a new domain warm up?
Weeks, not days. Smartlead says two to four weeks at minimum, starting at 5 to 15 emails a day in week one and reaching full volume by week four (vendor guidance). lemlist's help center caps a domain younger than a month at under 100 emails a day across all its mailboxes (vendor guidance). Our ramp tops out at about 30 a day per inbox. Tools and options: the best email warmup tools.
What do Google and Yahoo require?
Here's our summary of each provider's published rules. Most of the strict ones apply to bulk senders, which Google defines as anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts. A 2-inbox domain sending about 60 a day is nowhere near that, but the list is still the best setup checklist for any sender.
| Requirement | Google (in force since February 1, 2024) | Yahoo |
|---|---|---|
| SPF and DKIM | Both, for bulk senders | Both for bulk senders; at least one for every sender |
| DMARC | Required for bulk senders; the policy may be "none" | A valid policy of at least p=none, and DMARC has to pass |
| From address | The From domain lines up with the SPF or DKIM domain | — |
| Spam rate | Under 0.10% in Postmaster Tools; never 0.30% or higher | Under 0.3% |
| Unsubscribe | One-click unsubscribe plus a visible link, for marketing and subscribed mail | One-click list-unsubscribe header, a visible link, and opt-outs honored within 2 days |
| Other | Valid forward and reverse DNS, TLS, RFC 5322 formatting |
Set SPF, DKIM and DMARC on every new domain before the first email goes out, then confirm they work with an inbox test: how to check inbox placement. Each lookalike needs its own records, so budget the setup time per domain.
