Is Gong worth it for a small sales team?
For most teams of 1–5 reps, no. Gong is priced per user plus a platform fee, with no public prices, and it pays off when a manager has enough recorded calls to coach from every week. Under that bar, a tool with a public price does the core job: Fathom (free for individuals; Business with coaching at $25 per user a month billed annually), Avoma or Sybill. As of September 2026.
How we research this: facts come from each vendor’s public pages and named studies, dated where shown; the math is ours and labeled. Vendor prices and limits are as of October 3, 2026.

How much does Gong cost?
Gong doesn't publish a price. Its pricing page asks for your team size and sends a "customized proposal" (as of September 2026). Any Gong price you see on another site comes from third parties, not Gong, so we don't quote one.
What Gong does say, on its own pages, is how the bill is built:
| Cost driver | What Gong says (as of Sept 2026) | What it means for a small team |
|---|---|---|
| Per-user licenses | "Licenses are priced per user" | Every rep and manager who needs full access is a seat |
| Platform fee | "There is a platform fee based on the number of users supported" | A fixed cost on top of seats. Spread over 3 reps, it weighs more per head than over 30 |
| Core license + apps | Plans start from a core license for the Gong Foundation platform, with optional apps: Enable Essentials, Forecast Essentials, Gong Forecast, Gong Engage, Data Cloud (Gong Help Center) | Every app you add grows the quote. Start with the core |
| Contract term | Seat charges are "prorated to the end of your subscription term"; seats added after renewal are paid separately | You buy for a term, not month to month |
| Free collaborators | People without a seat are "Collaborators" with limited access, "free of charge" | Execs or AEs who only listen don't need a paid seat |
| Gong Credits | "Each paid, core seat includes 2,000 credits annually," shared across the company; extra credits can be bought | Heavy AI use (API, AI trackers, deep research) can add cost |
| Professional services | Implementation, training, managed-service and data-migration packages are listed in Gong's legal terms, with no prices | Ask whether onboarding is included or billed |
| Integrations | "You can integrate your existing tech stack for free" | No extra charge to connect your CRM (vendor-stated) |
Use this table as your quote checklist: ask the rep to price each line.
When is Gong worth it?
When a manager will actually coach from recordings every week, and there are enough calls to learn from. Gong's own conversation intelligence page is about helping managers "pinpoint what top performers do differently" and flagging deals "that have gone silent." That needs volume: several reps, lots of calls, and someone whose job is to listen.
Gong is probably worth a quote if all four are true:
- You have a manager (or founder) who will block time every week to review calls.
- Your reps run enough live calls and meetings that patterns show up in weeks, not quarters.
- You'll use the deal and forecast side, not only recordings and notes.
- You can commit to a term contract.
Skip it for now if any of these is true:
- You're 1–5 reps and nobody's job is coaching.
- You mainly want recordings, transcripts, AI notes and CRM sync. The tools below do that with a public price.
- You need month-to-month billing.
The coaching itself is where the money is. Gong Labs' 2018 analysis of 90,380 cold calls found that "the reason for my call is…" did 2.1x better, while "Did I catch you at a bad time?" cut meetings by 40%. Findings like that come from recorded calls. You don't need Gong to apply them: see cold call openers that keep prospects on the line.
What are the cheaper Gong alternatives for 1–5 reps?
Three tools with prices on their own sites (as of September 2026). Shown as monthly billing / billed annually, per user a month.
| Tool | Price (as of Sept 2026) | Recording and notes | Coaching | Deal view and CRM | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fathom | Free · Team $19 / $15 (2-user minimum) · Business $34 / $25 (2-user minimum) | Unlimited recordings and transcriptions, even on Free | Coaching metrics and AI scorecards on Business | Deal view and CRM field sync on Business | Cheapest team setup with coaching |
| Avoma | Startup $29 / $19 per recorder seat · Conversation Intelligence add-on $35 / $29 per seat | Recording, transcripts, AI notes; viewers free | AI call scoring, custom AI scorecards and coaching recommendations in the Conversation Intelligence add-on | Revenue Intelligence add-on $35 / $29 per seat (deal board, deal risk alerts, forecasting) | Paying only for people who record |
| Sybill | Free · Pro $36 / $30 · Business $108 / $90 | Unlimited call recordings and transcripts, even on Free | Call collections: comments, shared snippets and collections of your best demos (every plan). No scorecards listed on its pricing page | CRM autofill (10 fields) and a deal workspace on Business | Reps who hate CRM updates |

When should you skip each tool?
One skip line per tool, from the facts above.
- Gong: skip it if you need month-to-month billing or a public price. It sells per-user licenses plus a platform fee on a subscription term, and quotes only after you enter your team size.
- Fathom: skip Business if you're a solo rep. It has a 2-user minimum; the free plan covers individuals.
- Avoma: skip it if you want coaching in the entry price. Startup covers recording and notes, and AI scoring and coaching sit in the Conversation Intelligence add-on ($35 monthly, $29 annual, per seat).
- Sybill: skip it if you need scorecards. Its pricing page lists call collections, not scorecards, and Business is $108 monthly or $90 annual per user.
What does a 3-rep team pay?
Our worked example: 3 reps who record calls and 1 manager who reviews them. List prices.
| Setup | Monthly billing | Billed annually (per month) | Coaching included? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fathom Business × 4 users | 4 × $34 = $136 | 4 × $25 = $100 | Yes: coaching metrics and AI scorecards |
| Avoma Startup × 3 recorders + Conversation Intelligence × 3 | 3 × ($29 + $35) = $192 | 3 × ($19 + $29) = $144 | Yes, for the 3 reps. The manager joins free as a viewer; Avoma's help center ties AI coaching to a Conversation or Revenue Intelligence license, so add $35 / $29 if the manager needs one |
| Sybill Business × 4 users | 4 × $108 = $432 | 4 × $90 = $360 | Call collections plus deal workspace and CRM autofill; no scorecards listed |
| Gong | Quote only | Quote only | Yes |
That's the real question to bring to a Gong demo: what does Gong do for you that $100–$430 a month doesn't? If the answer is forecasting, deal risk across a big pipeline, or engagement built in, it may be worth it. If the answer is "better notes," it isn't.
What should you ask Gong on the demo?
Five questions, answers in writing:
- Seats: how many paid seats do we need, and who can be a free Collaborator?
- Platform fee: what's the fee for our user count, and does it drop if we shrink?
- Apps: which apps are in the quote, and which can we drop for year one?
- Term and onboarding: what's the contract length, and is implementation included or billed?
- Credits: will our planned use (API, AI trackers) stay inside the credits included with our seats?
Recording calls in the US? Some states require every party's consent. Set recording rules by state before the first call, whichever tool you pick, and check with legal counsel.
Where does call recording fit in the rest of your stack?
It sits after the dialer and the CRM. Get those right first.
- Calling at volume: best parallel dialer for SDR teams.
- The CRM your recordings sync to: best CRM for founder-led sales.
- Whole stack, layer by layer: Pick the Stack.
Every tool we cover, grouped by job, is on the tools hub.
